How and when did you start creating art?
I’ve always been drawn and have been interested in film. I took courses at the Art Institute of Chicago in high school and then went on to study art at Illinois State University, Ohio University, as well as in Italy.
What media and genres do you work in?
Currently, I work mainly in oil on canvas and photography. I’ve also worked in printmaking and drawing as well.
Who or what are your influences?
Alfred Hitchcock, Edward Hopper, George Bellows, Canaletto, and Edvard Munch come to mind. There are too many to list.
What was your inspiration for
Glen Echo Carousel at Night
?I wanted to paint the 100-year-old Dentzel Carousel installed at Glen Echo Park, a former amusement park that is now a national park outside of Washington, DC. after having visited the site several times.
I felt a nighttime version of the scene would best capture the illumination of the carousel. I was also inspired by John Sloan’s painting, “Travelling Carnival, Santa Fe,” and the carousel scenes at the end of the film, “Strangers on a Train.”
Describe your creative process?
Usually, it starts with observing a scene, photographing it (at different times), and then building a composition that I then draw on a canvas. I begin with a series of transparent glazes to add an inner glow to the scenes.
What are you working on currently?
Two nighttime cityscape views. One of an urban market and the other a vertical vista looking up a long street to the National Basilica in D.C.
What are your near/long term goals as an artist?
Near terms and long terms are to continue exhibiting and reaching an audience.
Where can people view/purchase your work (gallery, website, etc)?
