How and when did you start creating art?
I began making art in my childhood. Artmaking, for me, was always about making the things I could imagine into something physical. I loved finding things from the outside world that resonated with me and folding these things into my internal world.
What media and genres do you work in?
I work with watercolor, acrylics, oils, and sometimes dry media as well- I let myself wander through different media as the materials draw me to them. I work in a blended combination of figurative, abstract, and surreal genres. I have recently started adding ekphrastic prose poems to each piece, to optionally enrich the piece.
Who or what are your influences?
Conceptually stories probably influence the content of my work- I love reading fiction, listening to story-based podcasts, hearing fables and myths and so forth.
What was your inspiration for
Tea and Spirits
?This idea was a sort of variation on communing with ghosts by having a tea party.
“She would call them in a seance, and invite them to tea that she mixed with vodka, so that their spirits would likewise be infused with tannic pleasure.”
Describe your creative process?
I have an intuitive process, so I like to mark out a composition, experiment with materials, and then kind of give myself over to a kind of flow state.
What are you working on currently?
Recently, I have been doing a lot of commissions for album cover art. It is really nice to collaborate with musicians and be able to have our work intertwine and create a bit of gestalt. I am also putting together a book of paintings and the ekphrastic prose poetry I write to accompany each piece.
What are your near/long term goals as an artist?
I hope to keep connecting with people through my work. I love hearing that I enriched anyone's life. Long term I would love to have some great galleries to represent me, so that I could create more and do less on the self-promotional side of things- and maybe having them take me to the big fairs.
