 Workshops

Spatial Structures in Painting: Planning Interior Spaces and Landscapes. A 3-day Intensive Workshop with MATT KLOS. August 9-11, 2024 (Friday - Sunday). MANIFEST DRAWING CENTER | 3464 Central Parkway, Cincinnati OH. A painting is a construct. The painter uses a combination of color, value, and mark-making to organize the surface of a work. In this workshop, we will craft paintings with a focus on creating zones. This will allow the painter to identify and organize the painting into large shape areas: thinking first of light, dark, warm, and cool and then moving to hue, chroma, and texture. Identifying a simple structure makes it possible to succeed in creating a complex painting. Beginning and intermediate painters sometimes assume deft rendering or virtuoso paint handling holds the key to unlocking greater possibilities in their work. More commonly, a convincing large-shaped structure is what is lacking in their paintings. This workshop is for beginning, intermediate, and advanced painters interested in a gestalt approach to planning and painting landscapes and interior spaces. Students will benefit from slide lectures, individual instruction, and critique.
