Learn How to Describe Your Work With These 10 Questions
“So, what kind of art do you make?” As an artist, you’ve probably been asked this question more times than you can count. Whether an acquaintance has casually asked you about your work at a dinner party, or a curious collector at a gallery event, being able to effectively describe your work is an essential part of your successful career as an artist. Identifying the unique characteristics of your work can also help empower your future creative choices and decisions, give direction to your artistic vision, and help you prepare professionally for the expectations of the art world. Below, you’ll find ten questions that will help you describe your work.
The Importance of Describing Your Art
Learning how to identify your artwork effectively can help you sell pieces to interested buyers, submit work to a gallery for an exhibit, or when you’re giving a guest lecture. This essential skill will also aid you in writing numerous documents you’ll need as your career progresses. Here are just a few examples:
- Your artist statement
- A “Statement of Purpose” for an art call or grant application
- A proposal to a gallery or museum
- A biography section on your social media pages
- A narrative biography
- The “About” page on your website
It’s Time to Reflect
Rather than typing your answers on your computer, grab some paper, your favorite writing utensil, and answer the questions below. Answer each question as honestly as possible, and be truthful to yourself. Remember, this exercise is not an elevator pitch. There are no right or wrong answers. There is no character limit; your answers can be as short or long as they need to be. Take as much time as you need with each reflection. Above all, keep in mind that your answers don’t need to be perfect or polished by any means; this exercise is for you and you alone (unless, of course, you decide to share it). Try to enjoy the journey of this creative exercise.
- What do you create?

- What should a viewer notice when they look at your artwork? Are there unique details or techniques that are typical of you?
- What are your goals or intentions as an artist? Are they reflected in your work?
- Where does your art belong in the art world?
Final Thoughts
It takes time and practice to fine-tune your tone and decide precisely how you want to describe and interpret your artwork to others. Still, surely once you’ve grasped it, you’ll create a vivid experience and enticing opportunity when asked about your work. Once you’ve answered the questions above, consider hanging up your penned replies in your studio, workspace, or home. Use your responses to help guide you in writing your artist statement, letters (or emails) to galleries, and more. Also, consider your answers as you create your future work and remind yourself of your art’s unique qualities.
